What are accumulation tanks (cylinders)?

Accumulation tanks , as the name suggests, are used to accumulate heat from various sources, e.g. from solid fuel boilers, heat pumps or solar systems. They are in fact pressure vessels of a suitable volume that store heat from the a.m. sources, keeping it available for heating when necessary.

The advantage of accumulation tanks lies in the fact that all heat sources always work in their nominal parameters, i.e. with max. possible efficiency which brings high savings in heating costs and extends the service life of the sources as well.

Wide choice of volumes and possible special design

Accumulation tanks are offered in volumes from 200 to 5000 liters from our stock. On special order, accumulation tanks of volume up to 100 000 liters can be manufactured. In their standard version, accumulation tanks are fitted with nine G6/4“ ports; they can be also fitted with one or two flanges for installation of suitably sized tube heat exchangers depending on the application and performance desired. In tanks with one flange only, a tube heat exchanger is already fitted in the bottom section of the tank (e.g. for a solar system) as a standard.

Should this layout of ports be unsuitable for you, we can offer you a different design upon your request for higher purchase quantities, then also other components can be factory-fitted (pump stations, mixing valves, external plate heat exchangers etc. This way we can become a manufacturer of your unique compact appliances.

Insulation for accumulation tanks

For all accumulation tanks, high quality detachable insulation in soft polyurethan is offered , 100 mm thick with white outer PU leather layer.

Accessories to accumulation tanks

Accesories are represented first of all by fittings for trouble-free connection of heat sources and heating systems , further let's name thermometers, pressure gauges , electric heating elements and finned tube heat exchangers to be mounted into flanges. These heat exchangers are made from finned copper pipes that offer larger surface area and better heat transfer properties. They differ in the size of their heat transfer surface, length, connection fitting size, the manner of winding and number of tubes. When agreed (for large quantities), heat exchangers can be manufactured to your drawings .

Typical applications:

  • Combination with a solar system
Accumulation is always necessary in solar systems with backup heating . Sun is an instable energy source that is usually available in periods when heating is needed very little. So it is important to accumulate all this energy and use it subsequently for heating in a period when needed.
  • Combination with a heat pump
In systems with heat pumps, an accumulation tank meets three pricipal requirements . The first one is output levelling (modulation of heat pump output towards the desired heating output) and prevention of compressor cycling, which contributes to extended service life of the heat pump . The second requirement is to hydraulically level the flow rate through a heat pump (usually the higher value) with a flow rate in the heating system itself. The third requirement is to accumulate energy for the hours of high electricity tariff when the heat pump is not available.
  • Combination with a solid fuel boiler
When an accumulation tank is used with a solid fuel boiler or a hydronic fireplace insert, almost the same comfort can be achieved as with switched heat sources (gas or oil boiler, electric boilers etc.) supposed the accumulation tank is suitably sized and an intelligent controller used. A suitably sized accumulation tank respecting specific building properties and a boiler output may keep heating energy up to several days, without the need of stoking or re-igniting a boiler.
